New Immigration System

Last week The Government published a Policy Statement on the future UK Immigration System. Whilst this mainly focused on work schemes from January 2021 onwards, and the resulting press coverage of the pros and cons, particularly over low skilled worker routes, there was very little said about study.

In fact the mention of students is so brief, we can quote the reference (para 20) in its entirety:

“20. Students will be covered by the points based system. They will achieve the required points if they can demonstrate that they have an offer from an approved educational institution, speak English and are able to support themselves during their studies in the UK.”

Sounds very like the current Tier 4 scheme!

One point to note: as the new immigration system will apply to all non UK and non Irish citizens, the phrase  “approved educational institution” sounds like providers will need to be a licensed sponsor to educate EU students who join from 2021 onwards.
